The Compleat Flute-Master (1695)

About

This book contains a brief set of instructions on how to play the "flute" followed by a brief set of short pieces for the instrument. The instructional portion, which makes up the first seven pages of the text, includes two fingering charts, a brief explanation of note durations, and rules for embellishments. The remaining pages (pages 8-28) contain a number of 1-2 page short pieces.

The Compleat Flute-Master does not contain a definite attribution to a single author or publisher. The book's cover simply notes that the work is "Printed & Sold by IHare Musicall Instrument Seller at ye Golden Violin." The first page (shown towards the bottom of this webpage) is similarly signed "humble Servant's I.H."

Terminology

First and foremost, this instructional method is clearly intended for the vertical flute as evidenced by the illustration of three such instruments on the cover in addition to the vertical fingering chart used within. To refer to this instrument, the text's anonymous author utilizes the terms "flute" and "rechorder" on the cover, but only utilizes the former term within the text itself.
