Terminology
While the flute is referenced throughout the text, the section of most interest is by far the third and fourth chapters of Book 3, entitled "Of the Common Flute, or Flagelet" and "Of the German-Flute and Bassoon." In the third chapter, the term "Common Flute" is only used in the chapter's title while the term "Flute" is used to refer to the instrument throughout the rest of the chapter. However, in chapter four, the term "German Flute" occurs once in the body of text when it is being compared to the "Common Flute." Otherwise, the term "Flute" is generally used throughout the remainder of that chapter as well.
