the Abstract
The study of the transverse and vertical flute’s role in the early modern period is oftentimes complicated by the inconsistent use of terminology utilized in reference to those instruments in primary source documents from that era. While some brief essays attempting to clarify these nomenclature discrepancies exist, none of those studies consistently utilize the most reliable source of information regarding era-specific terminology: the primary source documents, such as sheet music, dictionaries, and manuals, from those eras. This convenience-sampled survey of flute-related primary source documents published in London between 1575 and 1820 provides an in-depth look at how exactly the terminology used in reference to the transverse and vertical flute evolved in England.
